Sculpture is art of form and the main mission of modern sculpture in Cuba is to immortalize images of celebrated persons and important events of Cubas social, economic and cultural life. Perhaps, the most famous Cuban sculptor is Juan Jose Sicre (1898 1974). This name is well-known all over the world; Sicre is one of the brightest representatives of Cuban modern sculpture. His work named Monumento al Soldado Invasor is heritage of not only Cuban but also American art as the whole.
One big group of Cuban sculptors making the greatest contribution into forming of the face of modern sculpture in Cuba includes Jose Oliva Michelena, Crispin Herrera, Benito Paredes,Alberto Sabas, Antonio Bachs, Felix Cabarrocas, etc.
Modern sculpture of Cuba is also represented by such prominent names as Teodoro Ramos Blanco, Ernesto Navarro, Jesus Geraldes Napoles, Mirta Cerra, Fernando Boada, Jesus Casagran, Carlos Sobrino, Florencio Gelabert, and Domingo Ravenet. Art of these sculptors obtained brand new plastic expressions formed under the influence of tendencies of the world modern sculpture. They used some common principles: primitivism, simplicity of forms, sense of tempo, using space as a plastic component of sculpture.
Women also made their contribution into development of Cuban modern sculpture: Lucia Alvarez, Caridad Ramirez, and Rita Longa. Caridad Ramirezs style can be described as romantic realism. Rita Longa chose extremely expressive style - decorative stylization characterized by musical orientation when space and shape form unique musical rhythm. Lucia Alvarez risked trying absolutely unexplored trend in Cuban sculpture abstraction.
There are also young sculptors working in Cuba who understand art of form" in their own way and practice different concepts providing artistic manifestation based on structured and organized masses. These sculptors are Lozano, Gonzalez Jerez, Girona, Tardo, Nunez Booth, Estopinan, Madera, Rodriguez, Gutierrez, Arjona.
